Criminal Lawyer
Legal Aid Queensland
Hayley is a Criminal Lawyer at Legal Aid Queensland.
My role is to provide high quality legal services to people facing financial hardship.
What are the first three words you think of when you hear the word ‘diversity’?
Respect, inclusion, equity.
What do you think it will take to develop truly diverse thinking within the legal industry?
The legal industry should encourage the inclusion of people who are from diverse backgrounds into positions of leadership. Those from diverse backgrounds can bring a different perspective, examples of lived-experiences, and sometimes a much needed difference of opinion. This allows for a broader representation of societal values, which really underpins the work we do in the legal industry.
What was your main driver to enter the legal industry?
Coming from a low-socioeconomic background, I know what it's like to feel out of my depth. I wanted to be the lawyer who was relatable, easily understood, and approachable. I was fortunate to get a university education through the generosity of a scholarship, and I felt it was my duty to use my good education to help others in need.
