Without mentioning your job title, how would you describe what it is you do now (whether at home, work, in the community, etc.)?

Seek, embrace and learn from new experiences; mentor, coach and guide; listen, contribute, collaborate and appreciate.

What are the first three words you think of when you hear the word ‘diversity’?

Belonging, equity, representation.

What do you think it will take to develop truly diverse thinking within the legal industry?

A conscious continued effort to ensure that each organisation (whether law firm or company) in which law is being practiced is reflective of the broader community. This means not only ensuring that diversity is front of mind in hiring, but that once in the organisation, diverse voices are given equitable opportunities to participate – whether it be ensuring that there is diversity in the leadership ranks, that there is diversity in the teams assigned to tackle particular issues, that every speaking engagement or published article opportunity has diverse representation, or otherwise.

What was your main driver to enter the legal industry?

My mum. I’d never intended to pursue law, but when I received the marks to be able to do so, my mum insisted it would be amazing and that I could fulfill one of her dreams (that she’d previously never shared) by following in her late grandfather’s footsteps (who, I then learned, was a successful barrister in Shanghai and Taiwan). At the time, all I wanted to do was find a career that would let me travel the world. Thankfully, as I’ve learned countless times throughout my life, mum is always right. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have a career in law that has spanned Australia, the UK and the US, and has far exceeded my expectations.
